Eat Like You’re on Vacation: Local Dining Experiences That Feel Like Florida
Eat Like You’re on Vacation: Local Dining Experiences That Feel Like Florida – When you picture a Florida vacation, chances are it includes swaying palms, a warm breeze, and delicious food enjoyed somewhere with a view. Here in Indian River County, you can find that feeling in a plate of conch fritters, fresh local fish, a leisurely breakfast by the pool, or an oceanfront meal with the waves as your backdrop. These four local dining spots invite you to slow down, soak up the tropical surroundings, and eat like you’re on vacation. Come along with me as I share what I ate and experienced along the way.
Capt Hirams Sandbar Restaurant – Sebastian, FL
At Capt. Hiram’s Resort in Sebastian, the Sandbar makes it easy to slip into vacation mode. With sand beneath your feet, coconut palms overhead, and cool breezes off the Indian River, this outdoor tiki-style spot invites you to settle in with a tropical cocktail and stay awhile. Live music adds to the experience, from laid-back local performances to national acts that bring a lively crowd. During my visit, I enjoyed conch fritters, chicken tacos—fish tacos are also available—and the fresh catch of the day. They purchase fish directly off the boat, bringing a local taste of Florida to the plate. Whether you’re staying at the resort or simply stopping by for a bite, an evening of food, music, and drinks under the stars can feel like a getaway all its own.

The Creperie at Maison Martinique – Vero Beach, FL
Tucked inside the Caribbean Court Boutique Hotel on Vero’s South Beach, The Creperie at Maison Martinique offers a leisurely start to the day surrounded by lush tropical greenery. It’s one of my personal favorite places on the island, and breakfast on the patio overlooking the pool feels like a little escape. Chef Daniel Wise, whom I’ve known for many years and honored at our Golden Fork Awards as both Chef of the Year and a People’s Choice winner, brings his creativity to this inviting breakfast cafe. During my visit, he prepared a Mango, Mint & Goat Cheese Crepe and a Mediterranean Benedict, both absolutely delicious. Between the food, the poolside view, and the relaxed atmosphere, this is the kind of place that makes you want to linger over breakfast and let the rest of the day wait.

The Wave Kitchen & Bar at Costa d’Este Resort & Spa – Vero Beach, FL
When I came up with the idea for this article, The Wave Kitchen & Bar at Costa d’Este Resort & Spa was one of the first places that came to mind. Owned by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, this oceanfront resort brings star power, Atlantic views, and memorable dining to Vero Beach. We were invited to attend Paella Night, where the Paella a La Costa made quite an impression. I was sharing with a coworker, so we added lobster tails—available for an additional charge and well worth it for our vacation-style feast. Dessert kept the experience going with a sampler of rice pudding, churros with dipping sauces, and their classic flan. With a spread like this and the ocean just steps away, it was easy to feel like we had escaped for the evening.

Waldo’s Restaurant – Vero Beach, FL
Last but certainly not least, Waldo’s Restaurant on Ocean Drive offers the kind of oceanfront dining that belongs on any Florida vacation itinerary. There’s seating indoors, but my recommendation is to grab an outdoor table and let the Atlantic Ocean provide the backdrop. The weather was perfect during my visit, and I lingered a little longer than I normally would while “working.” With Crazy Harry’s Cobb Salad and the Fresh Catch of the Day in front of me, I had every reason to settle in and enjoy. Both dishes were as delicious as they were beautiful to look at, and the ocean view made the meal even more memorable. Whether you’re here on vacation or call Vero Beach home, Waldo’s is a place to slow down, enjoy the moment, and let lunch stretch a little longer.
