Meet our Foodie Insider – Thomas Miller

Just like you, we want to know all of the best places to eat while traveling. This is why partnering up with The Treasure Coast Foodie Blogger was a "no brainer". We are excited for you to watch/read this interview and get to know our Foodie Insider, Thomas Miller!

Sit back, relax and get to know our Foodie Insider….

Name: Thomas Miller a.k.a. The Treasure Coast Foodie

Where are you from? – Born in Flint, MI, stayed in the Midwest for most of my life, ended up the longest in Fort Wayne, IN

What brought you to Indian River County? – My wife and I are big fans of Disney World and we traveled there frequently.  We ended up loving the year round summer weather and the Florida lifestyle, so we started exploring places we would want to live on the east coast.  IRC and Vero felt the most like home to us.

What was your reason for starting a blog? – When I was young, I wanted to be a chef, but the long hours steered me in a different direction and I was in Healthcare IT for over 22 years.  Over the last 10 years food became really important to me again and I was looking for a way to still keep my day job and do something creative with food.  Blogging just seemed like the perfect fit.

What’s your favorite dish that you’ve tasted so far? – That’s a tough question that I get all the time.  I like so many different things it’s hard to narrow it down to just one dish.  It’s easier to tell you what I don’t like.  Broccoli, I definitely don’t like broccoli.  I call it my “kryptonite”!

Do you cook?? – Yes, absolutely and I think I’m pretty good at it!  I taught myself by watching Emeril Lagasse years ago on Food Network.  I believe it makes me a better blogger because of it.

If so, what do you enjoy cooking most? – I love making anything BBQ in my smoker. I am always up for a challenge so I started with beef brisket since it’s known as the “Mt Everest” of meats because it can be so difficult to cook.  I’ve since mastered it and have my own special rub that I created for it too.

Fondest childhood memory regarding food? – Learning to make our families homemade chicken and noodles.

Who do you take your inspiration from? – I enjoy watching amateur chefs on YouTube and the unique and fun dishes that they create and of course all of our talented local chefs that create such amazing dishes!

Favorite photo you’ve taken? – I’ve taken so many it’s hard to pick just one, but I’ll pick one of my most recent photos from Michael’s on 7th and it’s their BLT & A sandwich.

Can you nominate three food bloggers you’d like to get to know more? – I’m currently working on a collaboration with other local food bloggers in the Treasure Coast area, so stay tuned for more information forthcoming on that!

Final thoughts regarding eateries here in Indian River County. – When I moved here, I had no idea this area was such a foodies paradise with over 150+ locally owned restaurants in the area.  I feel as though I’ve only scratched the surface with all of the great places in IRC and I look forward to discovering more of the hidden gems in our area

Thomas hosts meetup events at local restaurants for local foodies to gather and enjoy a meal together.  He also hosts an annual event known as “The Golden Fork Awards Ceremony” where he highlights the Top 10 Best Dishes he tasted over the past year and picks a Restaurant and Chef of the Year!
