We close our season with masterpieces that pay homage to our institutional heritage as a ‘classical orchestra’. Haydn had an almost life-long appointment as court composer for the influential Esterházy family. It was there he wrote one of the classical era’s greatest works for cello. His first cello concerto is filled with great tunes, sparkling wit, and blazing virtuosity. The second half is devoted to Beethoven’s seminal Third Symphony. The Eroica, dramatic, moody, tender, and ultimately triumphant, would become the blueprint for generations of symphonists wanting to fuse formal rigor with deep personal sentiment.
