Sustainable Restaurants in Indian River County

So what does it mean to be sustainable? This word is thrown around a lot lately, but do we really have a good understanding of what it means to be sustainable? The definition as listed in the Oxford Dictionary reads as follows “avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance“. In terms of what that means when you dine out at local restaurants, who is buying the most local products, who is using sustainably sourced ingredients, and who is recycling the old to make it new again.

Now let’s dive right in and see which restaurants in Indian River County are following the most sustainable practices!

AKOHO – A Kitchen of Her Own – Sebastian, FL

AHOHO owner, Shari Pierce has definitely gained quite a following in a short time which became obvious to me while I was standing in line to get a taste of her delectable delights! Her customers couldn’t say enough nice things about her or the food. I always thought this place only made baked goods and quiche, but I quickly learned of all the healthy sustainable options she offers. Everything is homemade and created from locally sourced, humane, and organic ingredients! With enough notice and many of her dishes can be modified to be vegetarian, vegan, or even gluten-free.

Owner, Santiago Ares, says “The key to eating healthy is to balance your lifestyle with clean food & drink and a good exercise program”. They feature nutrient-dense, wholesome, mostly organic foods simply prepared and sourced from local farmers as much as possible. On a previous visit, I tried the Tuna bowl and Salmon toast; both were fresh, satisfying, and quite tasty too!

Michael’s on 7th is a popular breakfast & lunch spot located in Miracle Mile that is doing its part to be as sustainable as it can be. Chef Michael responsibly sources as many ingredients as possible from local farms and handles them with respect. The first thing you will notice when they bring you a drink, the straw is made out of pasta! You also won’t find any styrofoam to-go containers here either, and everything is recyclable.

Mark & Bonnie, owners of The Bayou have been in the business for over 30 years, and Mark is also a contractor by trade. Nearly everything you see on the bar has been reclaimed from a previous business or from items he has collected and saved over the years. He built the bar, the tables, and the rolly chairs have a storied history too. In the early 1990s, the chairs were used in Holiday Inn’s when they had bars in the lobby. He saved them and upcycled them to be used again!
